When this picture was taken I had just completed 32 miles of the 64 mile 2009 Gunnison Growler. The weather started out alright but then the rain came down making an already tacky course a sloppy mess in spots. Mountain Bike Legend (and Trek Rider) Travis Brown was out on course for the second lap setting what would be a course record despite the conditions. Before I started my second lap Dave Wiens 6 Time Leadville 100 Winner and Race Organizer asked me if I was headed out again. You definitely don’t say no to a guy like that! I said I’ve got to and off I went! Dealing with chain suck and threats of rain yet again. To top it all off during the untimed but required finishing ride back into downtown Gunnison hail started to pelt all of us remaining riders on course! Just a final Growl from Hartman Rocks letting us know it’s presence as it did all day! The Gunnison Growler is a phenomenal endurace race and I’ll definitely be back for the 3rd time in 2010 no matter the conditions, because that’s why we love mountain biking!

We had a great turnout for our first group ride of the year. Six people in all showed up. We pedaled our favorite loop. For some reason Buff Crick seems to be getting smaller to me. Time to hit up some new loops and explore further along the Colorado Trail.

Thanks to all that showed up! April’s ride will be over in Fruita during our Spring Training Camp. April 17-19. I’ve got a doozy planned for us.

The last race of the Winter Park Series ended on Saturday Aug 30, with the King of the Rockies. This was one of the few races I was looking forward to this year. It’s a fun course, but it’s also a hard one. The D4, D2 WTB section and up Lower Cherokee at the end are ass kickers. They make for a lot of fun though. For me, I didn’t place well, 8th place, but I was 5min 01sec faster then last year. I can’t be too sad about that. Lance finished 5th place a little over 1 min ahead of me, beating last years time by more then 6 mins!

I took a day off from work and rode from my home to the top of Rollins Pass and back on my MTB. My goal was to ride as much dirt as possible. I knew it would be a long day in the saddle, I can’t recall the last time I attempted something like this. It was probably back in ‘91 or ‘92, I was in my 20’s and at sea leave in the Bay Area. No big climbs, no high elevation, no back country roads where some hill billies don’t like people riding around thier roads, and not turning 40 in two weeks! The Route From the top of HWY 46 and HWY 119 at Cold Springs Camp ground, to Missouri Gulch, to Gamble Gulch, through some unmarked ATV/Jeep Trails to the very end of Apex Road. Then up Elk Park Road, to the top of Mammoth Gulch. Almost 2hrs riding so far, about 9 miles. Yes, I was going slow, but also mostly climbing. The ATV trail was about 2 miles of baby heads and boulders. I road all but the last 10-20 ft. From the top of Elk Park and Mammoth Gulch I could see the divide clear. Clouds were moving in from the SW. Down Mammoth Gulch, Up Rollins Pass Road to the foot off Old Rollins Pass Rd. 15 miles and 2hr 20min At 9200ft, Up Old Rollings Pass Road. This is a pretty easy climb. It’s an old rail road route, so it’s maybe 2-4% all the way. I keep it at about 7-9 mph avg, HR 65% After 1:30, I got to Yankee Doodle Lake, 10,700ft. See the pics. It’s awesome here. But I still had 800ft to the top. On to Needle Eye Tunnel, 11,500. After 4hr 12mi 5000ft climbing, I’m on top of Needle Eye Tunnel. It’s awesome up there. It was a really nice day. The clouds were still to the SW, but to the North and East is was clear. After a quick lunch, I rode back down to Yankee Doodle Lake and hit the Jenny Creek Trail. FS808 and 502. It’s mostly a Jeep/ATV trail in the summer, and I’m glad I’m going down. Lots or big rocks and roots. I got a little lost behind Eldora and ended up going through the Eldora Nordic Center. I wanted to end out just outside of Rollinsville, and ride more dirt home. But as it was 3:30pm, I needed to get back so I rode hwy 119 back home from Eldora. Unfortunately, my GPS timer stopped a couple of times after the top Needle Eye Tunnel, so it didn’t record my trip back. I left my house at 8:30am, and got home at 5pm. About 60miles, and 6500ft ascent. Next time I won’t fiddle with the gagets Check out the links:
